SEAWEED BREEDING

         Seaweeds are sea products that are not known to be used by the Turkish people. In addition, they are products used both in human food and in various industries in many countries of the world. They have economic value. For this reason, breeding techniques have been developed for many species in addition to being collected from the seas. According to 2002 data, approximately % 25 of 48 million tons of aquaculture provided through aquaculture is algae. In terms of quantity, 10.5 million tons has been provided by farming. Its monetary value is $ 5.7 billion. These numbers reveal how important the issue is. About 80% of the seaweed produced is produced in China.

 




 Seaweeds can come in a wide variety of interesting structures.

Although it is not used as food in our country, the export of seaweed has been made in some years. Exports are made from seaweed called sea kadayıf (Gracilaria sp), which are collected especially from the Izmir Bay and surrounding regions. These algae are used to produce some  chemical substance namely agar agar

The topic is broad in general. There are many species cultivated in the world. There are important differences between them in terms of breeding technique and usage according to the species. For this reason, we are not able to give detailed information on this subject here. Interested people can benefit from textbooks published on this subject at various fisheries faculties. Here, we will be content to provide some information about the prevalence of the subject by giving various pictures.
